A Simple Guide to Tasting Wine

Ever wondered how to fully enjoy a glass of wine? It's not just about taking a sip and savouring the flavour. Tasting wine is an art that anyone can master with a few easy tips. Here’s a simple 4-step guide to tasting wine:

4-steps tasting wine
  • Look: Start with the right glass – a tulip-shaped one with a narrow opening is perfect for concentrating the aromas. Take a moment to observe the wine's colour and clarity. This can give you clues about its age, quality, and even the type of grape used.

  • Smell: Gently swirl the wine in your glass to release its aromas. Take a deep sniff and try to identify different smells like fruits, flowers, or spices. These aromas are categorized into:

    • Primary Aromas: These come from the grape itself and include fruits, herbs, and floral notes.

    • Secondary Aromas: These come from the winemaking process and are often yeast-derived, like cheese rind, nut husk, or stale beer.

    • Tertiary Aromas: These come from aging, usually in a bottle or oak, and include savoury aromas like roasted nuts, baking spices, vanilla, and old tobacco.

  • Taste: Now, take a sip and swirl the wine around your mouth. As you do this, inhale air slowly through your mouth as if you were using a straw. Try to identify the flavours - is it fruity or earthy? Sweet or acidic? See how these elements interact with each other.

  • Finish: Finally, think about the wine’s finish. Does it leave a lingering aftertaste or does it disappear quickly? The length and quality of the aftertaste can tell you a lot about the wine’s balance and complexity.
